Notes 3-6-14

1. Vote is determined by electoral colleges
2. Election tie of 1800 > both Jefferson & Burr got 73 votes
3. 12th amendment separates president & VP elections

Continued 3-7-14
1. national convention - called every 4 years to officially nominate presidential candidates
2. primaries are devices each party uses to select its nomination for president.
3. delegate selection process began as a "winner takes all", now moved to proportional representation.
4. Caucuses are closed meetings of political parties that gather to select delegates to the national convention.
5. convention schedule:

  • Day 2: adopt platform, keynote address
  • Day 3: select or affirm choice for vice presidential candidate
  • Day 4: select & affirm presidential candidate, done by delegates voting, candidate delivers acceptance speech
6. nominee characteristics: current president, long run of political experience, protestants from large states, good speakers, stable family life, healthy appearance.
